Paper tube and core manufacturing is a specialized segment of the paper converting industry, serving textiles, films, tapes, paper rolls, and industrial applications. The adhesive used in spiral winding and convolute winding directly affects tube strength, dimensional stability, and production speed. This guide covers everything paper tube manufacturers need to know about adhesive selection and application.

Paper Tube Manufacturing Processes

Spiral Winding (Most Common)

Multiple paper strips wound at an angle (typically 30-45°) on a mandrel

Adhesive applied to paper strip edges and overlap areas

Production speed: 30-120 meters/minute depending on tube diameter

Adhesive applied by roller coater or spray system

Used for: Textile tubes, film cores, postal tubes, construction forms

Convolute (Parallel) Winding

Paper plies wound parallel to tube axis, layer by layer

Adhesive applied between each ply

Slower production but higher crush resistance

Used for: Heavy-duty industrial cores, ammunition tubes, hydraulic cylinders

Adhesive Types for Paper Tubes

PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate) Emulsion

Most common globally for paper tube production

Good bond strength on kraft and recycled paper

Water-based, low VOC, easy cleanup

Setting time: 30 seconds to 5 minutes depending on formulation

Limitation: Contains formaldehyde traces in some formulations

Starch-Based Adhesive

Lower cost alternative to PVA

Excellent for non-critical applications

Requires higher application temperature on some formulations

Fully biodegradable and repulpable

Limitation: Lower wet strength, slower setting at high speed

Formaldehyde-Free Resin Adhesive

Premium formulation — zero formaldehyde content

Required for food-contact tubes, medical applications, and export to EU/US

Bond strength comparable to or exceeding PVA

Fast setting: 15-60 seconds depending on formulation

Xuegong formaldehyde-free resin adhesive designed for paper tube applications

Hot Melt Adhesive

100% solid, applied molten and sets on cooling

Very fast setting — enables highest production speeds

No water means no drying time or mandrel corrosion

Limitation: Not repulpable, higher cost, equipment requires heated applicators

Performance Requirements

Bond Strength

Tube crush resistance (RCT — ring crush test): 200-2,000 N depending on application

Ply adhesion: Paper layers must not separate under axial load

Edge bond: Critical in spiral winding — overlap area must not delaminate

Test method: ASTM D642 crush test, custom peel test on overlap

Setting Speed

Spiral winding at 60 m/min: Adhesive must set within 30-60 seconds

High-speed lines (100+ m/min): Require fast-setting or hot melt adhesive

Slow setting causes tube slippage on mandrel and dimensional variation

Rule of thumb: Adhesive open time must be less than 50% of mandrel rotation time per layer

Viscosity and Application

Roller coater application: 1,500-5,000 cPs typical

Spray application: 200-800 cPs (thinner consistency)

Too high: Poor spread, excess adhesive squeeze-out, roller picking

Too low: Over-penetration, weak surface bond, migration through paper

Temperature: Apply at 20-35°C for water-based; 150-180°C for hot melt

Environmental and Compliance

Food contact tubes: FDA 21 CFR 175.105 compliance required

EU market: REACH compliance, formaldehyde-free mandatory for many applications

Textile industry: Increasing demand for non-toxic, odor-free adhesives

Recyclability: Water-based adhesives preferred for repulpable tube recycling

VOC content: Below 50 g/L for indoor production environments

Application Equipment

Roller Coater System

Most common for spiral winding machines

Pickup roll, doctor roll, and applicator roll configuration

Adhesive film thickness controlled by doctor roll gap (0.05-0.20 mm)

Clean rolls every 2-4 hours to prevent buildup

Spray System

Used for convolute winding and wide-format tubes

Airless or air-assisted spray nozzles

More uniform coverage on uneven surfaces

Higher adhesive consumption (10-20% more than roller)

Quality Control

Incoming adhesive: Test viscosity, solids content, pH on each batch

Production: Crush test every 2 hours on sample tubes

Dimensional check: Inner diameter, wall thickness, straightness

Storage test: Sample tubes stored 24 hours at 23°C/50% RH before testing

Customer complaint tracking: Correlate failures with adhesive batch records

Common Problems and Solutions

Tube Delamination

Cause: Insufficient adhesive, low viscosity, contaminated paper surface

Fix: Increase application rate, check viscosity, verify paper moisture (7-8%)

Slow Production Speed

Cause: Adhesive setting too slowly for line speed

Fix: Switch to faster-setting formulation or hot melt

Mandrel Sticking

Cause: Adhesive migration through paper to mandrel surface

Fix: Reduce application rate, increase viscosity, use mandrel release agent

Dimensional Variation

Cause: Inconsistent adhesive application across strip width

Fix: Align coater rolls, check doctor roll gap uniformity, clean applicator

Odor Complaints (Textile Cores)

Cause: Formaldehyde or ammonia in adhesive formulation

Fix: Switch to formaldehyde-free resin adhesive

Cost Analysis

Adhesive cost: $0.02-0.08 per tube depending on size and adhesive type

Adhesive represents 3-8% of total tube production cost

Premium formaldehyde-free adds $0.01-0.03 per tube but opens export markets

Switching from PVA to formaldehyde-free: Minimal cost increase, significant market access benefit
