Gelatinization temperature is the thermal gateway that turns corrugated starch adhesive from a suspension into a bonding film. Set it wrong and you get soft pin adhesion, washboarding, warp, or burned viscosity that refuses to wet the flute tip. What Gelatinization Means on the Line
In the glue kitchen, starch granules swell and lose birefringence as temperature rises. On the corrugator, residual heat at the single facer and double backer finishes film formation. Operators often confuse 'gelatinization temperature' (lab / cook target) with 'hot plate surface temperature' (machine). Both matter; they are not the same number.
Typical Ranges (Starting Points, Not Dogma)
Classic Stein-Hall caustic cooks: gelatinization often discussed around 58–62°C in the carrier/batch context
Application viscosity at the applicator: commonly managed in a 30–60 second Stein-Hall cup band for many plants
Steam double backer surfaces: historically much hotter (often cited 150–180°C class environments) to drive traditional gels
Boiler-free / room-low temperature lines with instant-setting corrugated adhesive: designed for lower thermal demand, often operating flute/hot-plate regimes below ~100°C when chemistry matches the machine
Always follow the adhesive TDS for your exact grade—alkali-free adhesive and instant-setting powders shift the usable window.
Symptoms of Wrong Gel Window

Measurement Discipline
1. Log glue kitchen batch temperature at gelatinization hold and at drop to applicator tank
2. Measure applicator tray temperature each hour at production speed
3. Spot-check single facer and double backer surface temps left/center/right
4. Record Stein-Hall viscosity with the same cup, same operator training, same temperature correction habit
A 5–8°C unnoticed drop between kitchen and applicator is enough to push marginal batches into soft bond on tropical night shifts.
Steam vs Boiler-Free Tuning

On boiler-free corrugating lines, do not import steam-era setpoints. Instant-setting industrial starch glue is formulated for the lower thermal profile; overheating can dry the film before transfer completes.
Paper Moisture Interactions
Liner and medium entering above ~9–10% moisture steal heat and delay gel. Over-dried paper below ~6% can cause brittle bond and warp.
