Adhesive Cost per Ton of Corrugated Board

Calculate adhesive cost per ton of board from coat weight, solids, waste, and speed—not from bag price alone.

Adhesive cost per ton of corrugated board is a process number, not a purchasing slogan. Two plants can pay the same price per kilogram and still differ by a wide margin once coat weight, solids, trim waste, and speed-related scrap are included. Managers who only compare bag invoices reward the cheapest drum and then wonder why converting waste rose. A simple, repeatable calculation puts glue on the same page as paper and energy.

Start with mass balance. Adhesive used (kg) divided by good board produced (metric tons) is the first headline. Then split the kilogram figure into dry solids and water so you can see whether you are buying bonding polymer or paying to dry water. A kitchen that ships 24% solids versus 27% solids at the same wet coat weight is not the same cost, even if the bag price matches. Record both wet consumption and calculated dry consumption on the weekly sheet.

Coat weight is the lever operators control. If the target film is 8–12 g/m² dry on a given flute and the line actually runs 14–16 g/m² because the gap is open or the viscosity is low, every extra gram is money and moisture. Weigh a known area of board before and after a controlled wipe or use the supplier’s recommended gravimetric method; do not trust a pump stroke count alone. Recheck after every paper-mix change that historically moved absorbency.

Waste metres belong in the cost. Board that is crushed, warped, or weakly bonded still consumed adhesive. If 3–5% of output is downgraded, your “cost per good ton” is higher than consumption on the counter suggests. Tag waste by cause—alignment, moisture, splice, glue skip—so you do not blame the adhesive invoice for a mechanical week. Speed changes the economics. At 200–250 m/min, a unstable kitchen that forces slowdowns or extra clean-ups adds labour and lost contribution that dwarf a small bag-price gap. Include a simple “lost hours × contribution per hour” line when a candidate adhesive requires frequent viscosity rescue. A cheaper glue that costs one hour per week is not cheaper.

Powder versus prepared liquid changes the visible price and the hidden work. Powder can look expensive per kilogram until you count freight water you did not ship and the mixer time you did spend. Liquid can look convenient until storage life and returned totes appear. Worked example for discussion, not as a guarantee: 1,000 kg wet adhesive at 25% solids is 250 kg dry. If that dry mass supported 80 tons of good board, dry use is 3.125 kg/t. At a delivered dry-equivalent cost of 2.4 currency units per kg, adhesive is 7.5 units per ton of board before waste. If waste is 4% and was fully glued, good-ton cost is about 7.8. Change any one input—solids, waste, or price—and the ranking of two vendors can reverse.

Benchmarks should be local. Recycled-heavy 5-ply at high humidity will not match a virgin 3-ply export grade. Build a 8–12 week history by flute and by season before you publish a plant target. A single-month number after a paper-mill change is a snapshot, not a standard. Share the history with purchasing so a “savings” quote is tested against the same flute mix.

Kitchen discipline protects the number. Batches that sit too long, extra water “for feel,” and undocumented leftover dumps all inflate kg/t without a change in paper. Require batch tickets with solids, viscosity, and transfer time. Reject or rework lots outside the window before they reach the single facer. The cost model is only as good as the batch log.

When you evaluate modern alkali-free or high-speed systems, put application behaviour and solids stability into the same sheet as price. Score the trial with the same kg/t formula you will use after award.

When the night supervisor and the buyer can explain the same row, negotiations get shorter and less theatrical.
