Neutral Adhesive for Coated Paper and White Liner: Application Guide
Neutral adhesive protects coated paper and white liner from alkaline yellowing while delivering clean corrugating bonds, controlled viscosity, and appearance.
White-top liner, coated liner, premium printed facings, and decorative honeycomb products demand more than adequate bond strength. The adhesive must also preserve color, brightness, coating integrity, and print appearance. Highly alkaline starch systems can contribute to yellowing, discoloration, alkaline migration, or visible staining, especially when adhesive application is excessive or drying is uneven. A neutral corrugating adhesive formulated around pH 6.5–7.5 helps protect appearance while maintaining production performance.
Neutral does not mean chemically inactive or universally compatible. Paper coatings vary in pigments, binders, optical brighteners, sizing, and porosity. Why White and Coated Papers Are Sensitive
Brown kraft can hide minor color shifts that are obvious on a white-top liner. A pH change at the glue line may interact with optical brighteners or coating chemistry, creating cream-colored bands, edge yellowing, or reduced whiteness after storage. High moisture and heat accelerate migration through the sheet.
Coated papers also absorb adhesive differently from uncoated recycled liner. Lower surface porosity can delay water penetration, leave a wetter film, and increase slip before gel. Operators sometimes compensate by widening the glue gap, which worsens staining and washboarding. The correct response is a matched viscosity, film weight, temperature profile, and pressure setting.
Target Product and Process Window
A practical starting specification for neutral adhesive is
Finished adhesive pH: 6.5–7.5, measured with a calibrated meter
Stein-Hall viscosity: commonly 35–50 seconds at the documented sample temperature
Batch variation: within ±3 seconds of the approved target
Storage and use temperature: follow the technical data sheet, commonly protected from freezing and excessive heat
Application rate: establish by trial in kg/1,000 m² for each flute and liner combination
The 35–50 second range is not a universal recipe. A 40-second reading at 20°C is not directly comparable to one at 30°C. Record cup type, sample temperature, and elapsed time after mixing.
Applications
White-top testliner and coated kraft are primary corrugator applications. Neutral adhesive is also useful for litho-laminated displays, preprinted liners, food and consumer-goods cases where appearance matters, and honeycomb board faced with white or decorative paper. For honeycomb, verify penetration through the core contact area without telegraphing or staining the face sheet.
Premium e-commerce boxes and retail-ready packaging benefit when glue lines remain visually clean under high-resolution graphics. Formaldehyde-free product themes may also matter for brand and indoor-use packaging. Confirm the supplier's declaration and applicable test method rather than treating 'neutral' and 'formaldehyde-free' as interchangeable claims.
Incoming Paper Qualification
Record liner supplier, lot, basis weight, coating type, Cobb or relevant absorption data, moisture, brightness, and surface pH where available. Condition test sheets at controlled laboratory conditions before comparing color. A difference of 2–3 moisture percentage points can alter both bond and apparent shade.
Run a simple compatibility screen before production: apply a controlled adhesive drawdown to the back of the liner, expose it to the expected heat cycle, condition for 24 and 72 hours, and compare against an untreated control under standardized lighting. Instrumental color measurement is preferred. A Delta E threshold should be agreed with the customer; visually critical work may require a limit near 1.0–2.0 depending on method and substrate.
Glue Kitchen Preparation
Use clean tanks, lines, pumps, and trays. Residual high-alkali adhesive can shift a neutral batch out of range even when the new product is correctly mixed. Before conversion, drain legacy glue, remove deposits, rinse under the approved wastewater procedure, and verify rinse pH.
Follow the /products/neutral-adhesive batch instructions exactly. Add water at the specified temperature, start controlled agitation, charge powder slowly to prevent lumps and dust, and mix for the validated time. Measure pH and Stein-Hall viscosity at release. Do not adjust pH with unapproved acid or alkali; local neutralization can destabilize viscosity and introduce salts.
Use dedicated or clearly identified measuring tools. Calibrate the pH meter with at least two buffers bracketing neutral, commonly pH 4.00 and 7.00 or 7.00 and 10.00 according to the instrument method. Rinse the electrode between samples and do not rely on old indicator paper for release decisions.
Corrugator Setup
Begin with the supplier's applicator gap and film-weight recommendation, then make changes in 0.05 mm steps. Excess glue is the most common avoidable source of show-through and discoloration. Check applicator-roll cleanliness and runout before changing chemistry; a dirty metering roll creates alternating wet bands that resemble a formulation defect.
Use enough heat to gel and dry the bond without overheating the coated face. Establish settings at 120–160 m/min, then increase in controlled steps toward the production target. At each step, test pin adhesion, visual appearance, warp, and surface temperature. High-speed work up to 250–300 m/min should be treated as a separate validation rather than extrapolated from low-speed samples.
Pressure must secure flute-tip contact without crushing the coating or embossing the face. Inspect left, center, and right samples because pressure and glue-film variation across a 2.2–2.8 m web can create edge-only staining.
Quality Checks
At startup and after every major grade change, record
1. Adhesive batch ID, pH, viscosity, and sample temperature
2. Liner lot, moisture, coating identification, and roll position
3. Line speed, gap, heat settings, and surface temperature
4. Pin adhesion or approved bond test at left, center, and right
5. Whiteness or color measurement immediately and after conditioning
6. Warp, washboarding, and adhesive consumption per 1,000 m²
Inspect under consistent D65 or customer-specified lighting. Mixed warehouse lighting can make optical-brightener effects appear or disappear. Retain labeled samples for at least the customer claim window.
Troubleshooting
Yellow or cream glue lines: confirm batch pH, legacy caustic contamination, over-application, and excessive heat
Weak initial tack: check viscosity, coated-side absorption, pressure, and gel temperature before widening the gap
Blistering or coating lift: reduce moisture load and thermal shock; verify coating compatibility
Washboarding: measure film weight and liner moisture; excessive adhesive often drives the pattern
Edge-only discoloration: inspect cross-machine gap, pressure, and preheater temperature uniformity
Color change after 72 hours: test migration, residual alkalinity, storage humidity, and ink or coating interaction
Relationship to Alkali-Free Systems

Storage and Shelf Life
Keep unopened product sealed, dry, and within the TDS temperature limits. Rotate first-in, first-out and protect powder from humidity. Prepared adhesive should be covered and used within its validated pot life; do not blend an aged, contaminated heel into a fresh premium batch. Quarantine any material with odor, separation, unexpected pH drift greater than 0.5 unit, or viscosity movement beyond the approved band.
Production Trial Protocol
Run one representative white-top liner and one challenging coated grade. Baseline the incumbent adhesive, then clean the system and run neutral adhesive without changing multiple mechanical variables simultaneously. Hold each target speed for at least 30 minutes, retain samples, and inspect at 0, 24, and 72 hours. Release the conversion only after appearance and bond both pass.
