Pressure roll settings on the single facer machine control whether corrugating adhesive wets flute tips cleanly or crushes the medium before the bond can set. Too little load creates glue skip and low pin adhesion; too much load flattens flutes, kills caliper, and can cut ECT by 10–20% even when the glue kitchen looks perfect. What the Pressure Roll Does
On a single facer, the pressure roll (or pressure belt system on some designs) holds the liner against the fluted medium at the bonding nip where starch glue for corrugator has been applied to the flute tips. Correct pressure creates tip contact without collapsing the flute arch. Think in terms of uniform line pressure across the web—not a single 'handwheel number' copied from another plant.
Targets are OEM- and flute-specific. As a production mindset: start at the OEM midpoint for the flute, then trim based on tip wet-out and caliper, not based on operator preference alone.

Pressure roll cover condition acceptable (no flat spots, chunking)
Corrugating adhesive viscosity and temperature on target (±2–3 s / ±2°C)

Setting Procedure
1. Lock out if your procedure requires contact measurement; otherwise use OEM load cells / HMI pressures with guards in place
2. Set flute-specific baseline from OEM chart (B vs C vs E differ)
3. Confirm operator/drive side balance within OEM tolerance (often a few percent of load)
4. Thread up and run 50–100 m at 50–70% of job speed
5. Inspect flute tip wet-out: silver tips with adhesive, valleys mostly clear
6. Measure caliper vs paper construction expectation
7. Ramp to production speed; re-check tip coverage and adhesion
8. Record pressure, speed, flute, papers, adhesive batch, and caliper on the job card
Speed Interaction
At higher speeds on a corrugated board production line, dwell time falls. Plants sometimes raise pressure to 'force' bond—usually wrong. First confirm heat (including boiler-free corrugating line thermal setpoints), adhesive gelatinization window, and film weight. Instant-setting alkali-free adhesive systems are designed for lower thermal demand, but they still need correct tip pressure—not crushing pressure.
Rule of thumb used by many supervisors: if you need large pressure increases to bond after a chemistry change, revisit adhesive and heat recipes before accepting chronic crush.
Flute-Specific Notes
C-flute: more sensitive to crush; favor precise tip film over brute pressure
B-flute: slightly more tolerant but still loses ECT quickly when over-pressed
E-flute / microflutes: small absolute pressure errors show as appearance defects fast
Double-wall upstream facers: each facer needs its own documented recipe—copy-paste settings fail
