Choosing between instant-setting and traditional cooked starch glue is one of the highest-impact decisions on a corrugating line. Definitions
Traditional starch glue (classic Stein-Hall style cooks) uses caustic and borax chemistry to gelatinize starch with a relatively high gel temperature window—commonly discussed around 58–62°C—and depends on strong steam heat at the single facer and double backer. It remains widely used and well understood.
Instant-setting industrial starch glue (including many alkali-free adhesive and starch adhesive powder systems) is engineered for faster set and lower thermal demand, enabling bonding on modern high-speed lines and steam-free corrugating line designs that operate from roughly room temperature up to about 100°C without a steam boiler.
Both are starch glue for corrugated board. Neither is craft 'school glue.' Specify industrial corrugating grades only.

Alkali-free adhesive grades are not automatically identical to every 'instant' label—read TDS gel curves. Brownfield steam plants can trial instant-setting chemistry before a full boiler-free retrofit—sometimes heat setpoints drop and speed rises even on steam. Greenfield projects should decide adhesive and thermal technology together; buying a boiler-free corrugating line while specifying only traditional high-gel cooks fights the machine design.
