Corrugated Board Quality Inspection SOP: In-Line and Final Check Procedures

Standardize corrugated board inspection with left-center-right pin adhesion, ECT, caliper, warp limits, sampling frequency, and final release records.

A corrugated-board quality SOP must separate fast in-line decisions from controlled laboratory verification. Operators need immediate evidence that the line remains centered; the laboratory needs traceable results that support final release. Plants using /products/boiler-free-line equipment should apply the same specification discipline used on steam lines, with limits tied to board grade, customer requirement, and validated test methods.

Define Responsibilities and Specifications

Create one control plan for each board code listing liner and medium basis weights, flute, target caliper, pin adhesion, ECT, moisture, warp, dimensions, and appearance. Production performs visual and rapid checks; quality owns calibrated testing and disposition. Record the order, reel lots, adhesive batch, speed, time, sample position, result, and operator on every inspection.

Use Left-Center-Right Sampling

Take samples from the left, center, and right of the web after startup, major width or paper changes, and any pressure adjustment. Position labels must survive cutting and laboratory handling. A center-only sample can miss a 15–25% edge bond difference caused by glue-roll alignment, uneven heat, web tension, or pressure loading.

In-Line Check Frequency

Inspect the first saleable board before full-speed release, then check at least every 30 minutes or every 10,000 m², whichever comes first. Repeat immediately after a reel splice, adhesive batch change, stop longer than 10 minutes, speed change above 20%, or any alarm affecting heat, glue, pressure, or web tracking. Tighten frequency for new grades until capability is proven.

Pin Adhesion and Bond Checks

Use a quick fiber-tear or peel assessment in-line and a calibrated pin adhesion test in the laboratory. Test left, center, and right specimens in the correct flute direction and report force with specimen dimensions and method. A visually closed glue line is not sufficient if one position repeatedly falls below the approved minimum.

ECT Laboratory Procedure

Condition and cut edge-crush specimens according to the customer's specified standard, keeping edges parallel and free of crush. Test the required number, commonly 5–10 specimens, and report average, minimum, standard deviation, conditioning environment, and failure mode. Do not compare ECT values produced by different specimen preparation or conditioning methods as if they were equivalent.

Caliper and Flute Integrity

Measure board caliper at left, center, and right with the specified foot pressure, avoiding scores, edges, and visibly damaged areas. Compare results with the grade target and trend them by shift. A 5–10% caliper loss can indicate excessive pressure or flute crush and should trigger checks before operators add still more loading to improve bonding.

Warp Measurement

Place a representative sheet on a verified flat surface without forcing it down. Record machine-direction, cross-direction, S-warp, or twist and measure the maximum lift over the defined sheet dimension. A practical internal alert might be 5 mm over 1,000 mm, but the approved customer specification and converting capability must set the release limit.

Appearance and Dimensional Checks

Check blisters, delamination, washboarding, flute exposure, scuffing, contamination, edge damage, scores, cut length, width, and squareness. Measure at least three sheets at startup and one set at each scheduled interval. Separate cosmetic defects from functional failures, but never downgrade food-contact cleanliness, traceability, or safety requirements without authorization.

In-Line Versus Laboratory Decisions

In-line checks protect the next minutes of production and should finish within 2–3 minutes. Laboratory tests confirm strength, moisture, caliper, and bond under controlled conditions and may take 15–60 minutes plus conditioning time. Define which result can stop the line, which can place material on hold, and who can release quarantined pallets.

Reaction and Containment Plan

When a result fails, mark the last-known-good time and stop or slow the process according to risk. Quarantine material produced since that point, correct the suspected cause, and collect a new left-center-right set. Review glue gap, viscosity, temperature, paper moisture, preheater wrap, pressure, and speed before assigning the generic cause 'operator error.'

Sampling and Record Review

Supervisors should review missed checks each shift and quality should trend results weekly. Useful indicators include first-pass release above 98%, on-time checks above 95%, ECT coefficient of variation below 8%, and repeat failures per 100 orders. Final Release and Continuous Improvement

Final inspection should verify pallet identity, quantity, dimensions, appearance, test status, labels, and any customer certificate before shipment.
