Classic Yellow Adhesive in Modern Corrugators: When and Where to Use Traditional Glue

Understand where classic yellow caustic-based adhesive still fits laminating and corrugating, and when alkali-free glue offers a practical migration path.

Classic yellow adhesive, often called 黄胶 in Chinese-language plants, remains familiar in laminating and selected corrugating operations. Its continuing value comes from known recipes, installed glue kitchens, operator experience, and compatibility with established paper combinations. The right decision is application-specific: retain a stable process where it performs, or migrate when safety, complexity, energy, and consistency justify change.

What Classic Yellow Adhesive Is

Traditional yellow starch adhesive commonly uses a caustic-based preparation system with starch, water, alkali, and other recipe components selected for viscosity, tack, and gel behavior. Exact chemistry varies by supplier and plant. Operators must follow the current technical data sheet and SDS; color or a familiar local name is not a complete specification.

Where Laminating Remains a Strong Fit

Sheet-to-sheet and paper-to-board laminating may favor a proven yellow adhesive when open time, lay-flat behavior, machine speed, coating method, and paper absorption are stable. Corrugator Applications

A conventional corrugator can continue with classic adhesive when the steam and glue-kitchen systems are reliable, paper mix is known, target speed is achieved, and pin adhesion remains capable. Track viscosity, gel point, solids, temperature, batch age, and kg/1,000 m². Familiarity should be demonstrated through data, not assumed from years of use.

Compatibility Checks

Trial kraft, recycled liner, white-top, coated stock, and high-absorption medium separately. Confirm glue-roll material, pump seals, filters, pipes, storage tanks, and cleaning chemicals are compatible with the formulation. Test at minimum, normal, and maximum approved speed; compatibility at 100 m/min does not establish performance at 200 m/min.

Control Caustic-Based Preparation

Caustic addition requires controlled weighing, order of addition, temperature, mixing time, ventilation, PPE, eyewash access, and spill response. A recipe using 500 kg total batch mass should never rely on unmarked buckets or estimated partial bags. Record actual additions and quarantine any batch whose identity or sequence cannot be verified.

Measure Application and Bond

Use calibrated consumption data in kg/1,000 m² and inspect the wet film left, center, and right. Verify pin adhesion, fiber tear, warp, moisture, caliper, and delamination after conditioning. A reduction from 5.0 to 4.3 kg/1,000 m² saves 14%, but it is acceptable only if all quality limits remain capable.

Reasons to Keep Classic Glue

Retention can be rational when customer approvals specify the current system, product mix needs its open-time behavior, the line already meets quality and cost targets, local ingredients are dependable, and operators control hazards well. Avoid migration during a peak season or simultaneous major paper change unless contingency capacity is available.

Reasons to Consider Alkali-Free

Migration may reduce handling of separate caustic ingredients, simplify batch preparation, improve recipe consistency, and support lower-temperature or boiler-free process architecture. /products/alkali-free-adhesive should be evaluated with total delivered cost, water, mixing, hold time, consumption, energy, board performance, training, and supply resilience—not ingredient price alone.

Run a Controlled A/B Trial

Choose three representative board structures and produce matched orders with classic and alkali-free systems. Keep paper lots, width, speed, roll settings, and test methods as constant as practical. Compare at least 10 samples per condition for pin adhesion or the approved bond test, plus warp, caliper, moisture, waste, energy, and adhesive consumption.

Plan the Migration

Inspect tanks, pipework, pumps, filters, glue rolls, and meters before conversion. Define drain, cleaning, rinse acceptance, first-batch quantity, labeling, and segregation. Do not mix old and new adhesives unless written compatibility testing explicitly permits it; a 5–10% heel can distort viscosity or gel behavior and make trial results inconclusive.

Train and Release Both Shifts

Issue revised batch cards, SDS access, test methods, hold times, alarm limits, and deviation rules. Train day and night teams, then require the same release data from each. Review the first 3, 10, and 30 production days so an early successful demonstration becomes a controlled long-term process.

Compare Total Operating Cost

Include adhesive per 1,000 m², rejected board, batch labor, cleaning, PPE, chemical inventory, energy, boiler or hot-water demand, wastewater, downtime, and customer claims. Choose by Application Evidence

A factory may keep classic yellow adhesive for laminating while moving selected corrugator grades to alkali-free technology; migration does not have to be all-or-nothing.
