Adhesive Preparation Best Practices: From Powder to Production
Technical Guides

Proper adhesive preparation is fundamental to corrugated board quality. Even the best adhesive formula will underperform if mixed incorrectly.

Equipment Requirements:

Mixing Tank:

• Clean, dedicated mixing vessel

• High-shear mixer recommended

• Temperature control capability

• Accurate volume markings

Water Supply:

• Clean, consistent quality

• Temperature-controlled

• Hardness may affect performance

Measuring Equipment:

• Accurate scale for powder

• Thermometer

• Viscosity cup (Stein-Hall)

Standard Mixing Procedure:

Step 1: Water Preparation

• Add measured amount of water to tank

• Adjust temperature per formula (typically 30-40°C)

• Record water temperature

Step 2: Powder Addition

• Weigh powder accurately

• Add slowly while mixing

• Avoid lumps from adding too fast

Step 3: Mixing

• Mix for specified time (15-20 minutes typical)

• Monitor for uniform consistency

• Check for undissolved particles

Step 4: Verification

• Check viscosity (target range per formula)

• Check temperature

• Record all parameters

Step 5: Transfer

• Transfer to production tank

• Strain if necessary

• Begin use within specified time

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

• Adding powder too fast (causes lumps)

• Water too hot (pre-gelatinizes starch)

• Incorrect ratios (weakens performance)

• Insufficient mixing time

• Contaminated equipment

Quality Control:

• Test every batch before use

• Log all preparation parameters

• Track performance vs preparation variables

• Investigate any quality issues immediately
