Shrink wrapping and strapping only create value when they match corrugator and converting throughput without crushing stacks or waiting on film changes. End-of-line integration fails when the board line runs 200–300 m/min in peaks while the pack-out cell is still sized for yesterday’s order mix.

Define the Sync Point Explicitly

Decide whether the strapper or wrapper paces from stacker discharge, conveyor accumulation, or a supervisory rate signal. Document target packs per hour and maximum acceptable queue time—often 2–5 minutes of accumulation before stack lean or moisture pickup becomes a quality risk in humid plants.

Match Throughput to Board Speed Honestly

A corrugator making board at 250 m/min does not automatically need a pack cell rated for that instantaneous peak if converting and bundling dilute the flow. Calculate packs per hour from average saleable m/min, blank count per stack, and straps per bundle. Oversized film machines still bottleneck on operators and pallet supply.

Protect Stack Quality Before Film Heat

Squared stacks with controlled compression survive wrapping; leaning stacks become crushed corners under shrink force. Check stacker alignment, sheet count accuracy, and strap tension before blaming film gauge. Corner damage that appears after wrapping often started as a ±1–2 sheet count or uneven bottom sheet problem.

Specify Film and Strap for the Climate

Select shrink film gauge and strap type for stack weight, humidity, and storage time. Validate seal strength after a 24-hour hold in the warehouse climate, not only at the machine. A film that looks tight at 20°C can relax or puncture when yard temperatures exceed 35°C.

Tune Strap Tension to Board Grade

Excess strap tension crushes flute on light grades; weak tension lets units walk on forklifts. Record tension settings by board combination and review damage codes weekly. Aim for the lowest tension that keeps unit integrity through a defined forklift and truck test, not the maximum the head can apply.

Design Conveyors as Buffers, Not Decorations

Accumulation conveyors absorb corrugator speed waves and converting changeovers. Short, rigid links create stop-and-go that lowers OEE. Find Bottlenecks with a Simple Rate Ladder

Measure stacker output, conveyor transfer, strap cycles, wrap cycles, and palletizing separately for one busy shift. The slowest sustainable step is the true constraint. If strapping averages 18 seconds per cycle while wrapping needs 25–30 seconds, adding a second strapper will not raise shipped pallets.

Plan Changeovers for Film and Strap SKUs

Multi-SKU plants lose more time on film width and strap changes than on peak machine speed. Standardize pack recipes and stage materials within a 5–10 minute walk. Track changeover minutes the same way you track flute changes on the wet end.

Link Pack-Out Capacity to Production Scheduling

Commission at Progressive Line Speeds

Coordinate Utilities and Safety Zones

Shrink tunnels need stable electrical or gas supply and clear heat guarding; strappers need controlled access around feed and seal heads. Integrate E-stops and LOTO points with the corrugating line safety plan so pack-out never becomes an unprotected island during maintenance.
