Palletizer Systems for Corrugated Board Delivery

Palletizers only earn their footprint when they match corrugator and converting discharge without crushing stacks or waiting on empty pallets. For plants feeding board at peaks near 200–300 m/min, selection starts with true packs-per-hour and stack quality—not with a robot brochure speed rating alone.

Define Delivery Rate from Saleable Flow

Convert average saleable m/min, sheets per stack, and stacks per pallet into a sustainable palletizer rate. Instantaneous wet-end peaks often exceed what converting and bundling deliver to the cell. Oversizing for nameplate m/min while undersizing pallet supply still creates the same forklift queue.

Compare Robotic and Conventional Architectures

Conventional layer or portal palletizers can excel on high-volume, stable patterns with short cycle times. Robotic cells win when SKU mix, pattern changes, and footprint constraints dominate. Require a timed demo on your heaviest and most awkward stack—not only on a light marketing blank.

Protect Stack Quality Before the Gripper Closes

Squared stacks with accurate sheet counts survive palletizing; leaning stacks become crushed corners and slipped layers. Target count accuracy within ±1–2 sheets on critical SKUs and correct stacker alignment before blaming gripper force. Corner damage that appears on the truck often started at the stacker.

Match Throughput Honestly to 200–300 m/min Lines

A corrugator capable of 250–300 m/min does not automatically need a palletizer rated for that instantaneous peak if converting dilutes flow. Size for the bottleneck after bundling and strapping. If the strapper averages 18–25 seconds per unit while the palletizer waits on pallets, buy pallet logistics before another robot axis.

Score Footprint Against Aisle and Expansion Reality

Measure infeed accumulation, empty-pallet staging, full-pallet discharge, and forklift turning radius. A compact cell that blocks two aisles can cost more OEE than a larger footprint with clean flow. Plan at least a few minutes of accumulation so wet-end speed waves do not slam stacks into a starved gripper.

Integrate with Wrapper and Strap Cells

Palletizing after shrink or strap changes the unit integrity and cycle time. Align recipes so film heat and strap tension do not fight layer forming. Use shrink-wrapper-strapping-corrugating-line-integration to keep end-of-line sync one system instead of three competing machines.

Link Selection to Production Scheduling

Batch similar pallet patterns after flute and width families so the cell is not thrashing while the corrugator is stable. Set Selection Criteria in a Weighted Scorecard

Score cycle time on real SKUs, pattern change minutes, stack damage rate per 100 units, footprint, energy, spare parts lead time, and local service depth. Weight stack damage and changeover at least as high as peak cycles per hour for multi-SKU corrugated plants.

Commission at Progressive Delivery Rates

Validate at low, medium, and peak converting-equivalent rates while holding pallet recipe constant. Record tip-overs, layer offsets, gripper re-picks, and queue length. Do not accept an empty-line demonstration as proof for multi-shift humid-plant duty.

Plan Safety Zones with the Rest of the Line

Palletizer cells need interlocked access, clear forklift segregation, and e-stop integration with upstream conveyors. Treat the cell as part of the corrugating-line safety plan so maintenance never works inside an unprotected island during a jam clear.

Keep Upstream Heat and Bond in Scope
